The Liberty County Sheriff's Department is fortunate enough to have a dedicated traffic
enforcement unit. The uit was initially formed from within the department using a Federal Grant
provided through The Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. Administered through the Governor's
Highway Traffic Safety Office, the grant provided for salaries and all equipment for a two man
unit. Upon termination of the grant, the unit was continued with an additional two deputies added.
The goal of the unit is to reduce traffic accidents and deaths through the stringent enforcement of
traffic laws. A major goal of the unit is the reduction of DUI offenses through increased patrol
and through education programs.
The deputies assigned duties within the unit are highly trained in the area of accident
investigation and traffic law enforcement. Accidents, traffic pattern, violation reports and other
data are analysed by the unit to determine where enforcement activity is needed. Target
enforcement strategies are then directed at these identified areas with a goal of reducing
violations. This is accomplished through a variety of means including increased patrolling, use of
RADAR for speeding violations, random license check points and other enforcement strategies. The
information collected by the unit is constantly evaluated to insure the efforts are directed at the
areas where they are needed.
The Trafic Safety Unit is located with the Detective's office at the Liberty County Jail.
Anyone needing information or assistance is invited to contact them at (912) 876-4555.
